Italian Sea Bass and Squid Prices Surged in May-24 Ahead of Summer Season

Fresh fish, particularly sea bass and cephalopods like squid, have seen a significant price increase in Italian regions in May-24 compared to Apr-24, with sea bass experiencing a rise of at least 21% and squid increasing by 16.5% month-on-month (MoM). This surge is due to heightened demand preceding the summer season, leading to higher prices. Consumers and restaurants often opt for farmed fish from Greece and Turkey due to their more stable prices, particularly for species like sea bass and sea bream. In May-24, prices for medium-sized sea bass (400/600g) varied across Italy, ranging from USD 4.36/kg to 9.80/kg in different fresh fish markets.
