Kenya Intends To Impose a Ban on Raw Tea Exports To Add Value to Its Tea and Improve Farmers’ Incomes

Kenya is expected to ban the export of raw tea from the country as per the president's directive. The government intends to invest in a common user facility in order to add value to its tea and then export it to increase farmers' income. Kenya's tea export earnings in 2021 stood at USD 1.12B compared to USD 977M in 2020, with a 15% increase YoY. Tea prices increased 1.7% WoW in W42 at the weekly Mombasa auction, from USD 2.33/kg to USD 2.37/kg. The total volume traded in W42 was 8.6M kg, compared to 8.5M in W41, an increase of 1.16% WoW.
