During W20, papaya prices surged in most producing regions in Brazil due to a decreased supply of Hawaii and Formosa varieties, with strong demand. In the south of Bahia, Hawaii papayas sized 15 to 18 were sold for approximately USD 0.87 per kilogram (kg), marking a 5% week-on-week (WoW) increase. Meanwhile, in western Bahia, Formosa papayas were sold for USD 0.52/kg, reflecting a 15% rise in WoW. Producers noted that price variation remained high due to quality issues like smaller-sized fruits and blemishes. Looking ahead to the remainder of May-24, availability is anticipated to stay constrained, although sales may weaken towards the end of the month.
