Portugal is buying guavas directly from Brazilian producers through an agreement signed with the Cooperativa Agroindustrial de Carlópolis (COAC). The unprecedented agreement was reached after contacts were made during the 1st International Meeting for the Export of Horticulture from Northern Pioneiro do Paraná.

COAC produces guava during all months of the year, thanks to the total pruning system, consolidating itself as the municipality with the highest productivity of this fruit in Paraná, and one of the largest in Brazil. According to the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater), about 390 ha are used for cultivation in the area limited by the indication of origin and the production potential is 23K MT/year under normal climatic conditions.

According to João Victor Bovo, responsible for FG fruit exports - the company that made the first sale of fruits to Portugal -, the main attraction is the Global G.A.P seal, obtained by the producers' cooperative. It is a certification of global reference for good agricultural practices, which protect those who practice safe and sustainable agriculture.

The view of producers
For rural producer Inês Sato Sasaki, who has worked in the field for more than 20 years, the view of producers is quite optimistic. But he says that in 2016, the year they started a project for the professionalization of cultivation in the region, he still did not plant guavas. “I believed in that proposal because I was confident that certified products and cooperative work are more efficient and are more likely to win new markets. I planted my first feet and embraced the initiative. I am very happy with the export, it is a dream come true, an immense joy. I am grateful to all the entities that helped us ”, emphasizes Inês.
In this sense, Noriak Akanatsu, producer and president of COAC, also celebrates the sale to Europe. In addition, it also highlights that the deal was closed thanks to the presence of the buyer in loco, on the properties, which ended up allowing to prove the commitment to quality in production.

According to the Municipal Agricultural Production Survey (PAM) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) of 2018, Brazil produced more than 578,600 MT of this fruit, with guava moving the candy agroindustry, generating income for 6 thousand small producers across the country. The annual income from orchards is around R $ 800 million (about € 229 million).
