Japanese manufacturers of bean-based products are concerned about the rising price of mung beans, mainly since China, their top supplier, has increased its price by 50% since 2019. As material stock for 2023, mung beans from Myanmar, the leading exporter of mung beans, gained attention from those manufacturers. However, there were a few recent cases of Myanmar’s mung beans that did not pass pesticide residue checks in Japan. Thus, Japanese buyers are more careful about the quality of Myanmar’s mung beans. Therefore, cheaper mung beans from neighboring countries or alternative kinds of beans are gaining demand from manufacturers.
