Leading up to the national holiday at the end of this month and driven by the surge of demand for pork meat, the price of this commodity across the Northern Sumatra region is currently on the rise. The latest retail price has been reported at IDR 140.000/Kg, a steep incline in prices from the previous two weeks at IDR 110.000/Kg. A contributing factor for this situation is the supply from local farmers that has been lower than normal, as farmers have been dealing with the swine influenza problem for the past two months. Some sellers projected the price to remain at the range of IDR 110.000-120.000/Kg even after the holiday season has ended, as the supply from local farmers is not expected to recover anytime soon.
