South African potato prices have doubled over a year, increasing by 102% year-on-year (YoY) in Oct-23, exceeding the mid-Oct-22 average prices. The retail price for a 7kg bag ranges from USD 5.79 to 6.31, while a 10kg bag is priced around USD 8.42. This price hike is due to factors such as electricity shortages, rising production costs, and reduced potato output in northern regions because of dry weather conditions.
