South Africa’s Total Maize Supply and Demand for the 2023/24 Season

The total supply of South Africa's maize is projected at 17,111,746 MT for the 2023/24 marketing season. This includes an opening stock (on 1 May 2023) of 1,939,971MT and domestic commercial deliveries of 15,279,775MT. No imports are expected, with early deliveries of minus 140K MT and a surplus of 32K MT.

The total demand (domestic plus exports) for maize is projected at 14,897,200MT. The total domestic demand is projected at 11,592,200MT. This includes 5.49MMT processed for human consumption, 6MMT processed for animal and industrial consumption, 17.2K MT for grist, 30K MT withdrawn by producers, 45K MT released to end-consumers, and a balancing figure of 10K MT (net receipts and net dispatches). A projected export quantity of 305K MT of processed products and 3MMT of total whole maize is estimated for exports for the 2023/24 marketing season.
The projected closing stock level for 30 April 2024 is estimated at 2,214,546MT. At an average processed quantity of 958,933MT per month, this represents available stock levels for 2.3 months or 70 days.
