Peru Remains Among the Top Ten Fruit Suppliers in the World
So far this year, Peru has exported USD 5,000 million in fruit, which represents more than 50% of agricultural exports, as reported by the Directorate of Development and Information Processing of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur). The official details show that with this year's performance, Peru will now be able to be among the top 10 fruit exporters in the world, where the United States, Spain, Mexico, China, Thailand, Chile, Turkey, Vietnam, Italy and South Africa made the list in 2021. Fresh grapes are in second place, for USD 594,475,174 with 251,903MT to the world, which meant a growth of 12% in value and 9% in volume. Then there are avocados, mangoes and bananas, according to the Agro-export Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX). Both blueberries and grapes have the United States as their main market. Especially after the pandemic, consumers choose to improve their eating habits and consume more natural products.

Flooding of the Orange River in South Africa Affects Grape Quality and Volume
The Orange river in the Northern Cape of South Africa burst its banks during W47 due to the heavy rains that fell in the Northern parts of the country. This caused some farms next to the river bank to be flooded. It was feared that this will negatively affect the quality of the grapes and cause major damages. The outcome is not as negative as feared, with growers prioritising orchards that have not been affected. There is an expectation of lower grape harvest volume compared to last year.
South African Table Grapes to Benefit From High Demand and Low Supply in EU Markets
There is a good opportunity for South African table grapes in the EU market. The Northern Hemisphere supply has exited the market, leaving a healthy EU market awaiting fresh grapes from the Southern Hemisphere. South African supply is set to take advantage of the high demand and low supply in the EU. As of W46, there were 19% less Peruvian and Brazilian grapes on its way to the EU. This is as a result of higher freight costs and weaker exchange rates, which make the natural US trade channel more appealing for these South American nations. The season is still long, and with South African grape production costs up 17% compared to last year, each and every favourable movement in the EU will need to be capitalised on to ensure profitable returns to growers.
South African Grape Prices Continue to Drop In Domestic Market
South African domestic market prices for grapes continue to drop. In W46, the average price for Size L Class 1 grapes on the domestic municipal markets in Cape Town and Johannesburg was USD 4.65/kg (R80). In W49, in Cape Town, grapes are sold at USD 1.74/kg (R30) while in Johannesburg they go for USD 1.03/kg (R17.74). This is due to the increase in supply volume to the domestic markets and the availability of alternatives such as stone fruits and cherries. The quality of grapes on the upper end are closer to USD 1.74/kg (R30) which is acceptable with good eating quality. On the lower end, the grapes lack flavour and shelf-life. There is stiff competition regarding good quality and pricing from cherries at USD 6.40/kg (R110), melons at USD 0.76/kg (R13) and stone fruit at USD 1.74/kg (R30) on the domestic markets. The next few weeks will be a challenge for South African grapes in the domestic market due to availability of alternatives at competitive prices.

Spain
The Price of Spanish Aledo Grapes Is Expected to Rise Due to Increased Demand at the End of the Year
The 2022 Spanish grape campaign is already in its final stretch. The first shipments of counter-season grapes from Latin America have already arrived on the domestic market in W49. The campaign of the Red Globe, a seeded red grape variety, is already over in Spain, and the majority of the remaining grape production is focused on the Aledo variety, which is a white grape with seeds and is in high demand in Spain at the end of the year. This is due to the Spanish tradition of eating grapes during the New Year's Eve chimes, with each person consuming approximately 12 grapes. In W49, the price is around USD 2.10/kg EXW Spain, stable and expected to rise in the coming weeks due to increased demand.

Brazil
Rain in Brazil During W48 Affect Grape Deliveries to the US
During W48, rains in Brazil caused damage to grape production. Growers have increased monitoring and powdery mildew protection. On the other hand, post-harvest quality problems are causing grapes that were destined for the US market to be directed to the domestic Brazilian market. Grapes remain of good quality but with low post-harvest resistance and longevity.
Niagara Grape Prices Fall In São Paulo
The proximity of the end of year festivities is already enabling good sales in the Niagara producing markets of São Paulo. Despite the good flow, in Louveira/Indaiatuba (SP), the gradual increase in supply is causing a reduction in prices: the average sale in W49 (05 to 09/12) was USD 1.13/kg (R$ 6.00), a decrease of 22 .6% compared to last week. In Porto Feliz (SP), the availability of grapes is still controlled; however, the high supply from Louveira/Indaiatuba reflected negatively on prices. Niagara was traded at an average of USD 0.94/kg (R$5.00), down 27.10% over the same period. It is also worth remembering that São Miguel Arcanjo (SP) will start harvesting close to Christmas, further increasing the supply of rustica in the country.

Tasty Muju Apples and Grapes Are on the Table in Vietnam
Apples and grapes produced in Muju, North Jeolla Province, went on their first export to Vietnam on December 6. On this day, Muju-gun held a shipping ceremony for Vietnamese exports of apples and grapes at the Muju Nonghyup Eco-friendly Distribution Project Group in Anseong-myeon. The county plans to export 100MT of apples by May next year and 4.8MT of Shine Muscat grapes are sent to Vietnam. Governor Hwang In-hong said, "Muju's apples and grapes are very popular with consumers because of their high sugar content and good quality."
‘Shine Muscat’ Poverty Amid Abundance, Lack of Export Due to Poor Quality
This year, Shine Muscat grape production in 2022 increased by about 50% nationwide compared to last year, showing an explosive increase. However, Shine Muscat for export is running out of stock due to insufficient quantity to meet the sugar content and weight. There is a voice of criticism that it is because farmers are over-harvesting and neglecting quality control in pursuit of immediate profits. According to the quality standards for export grapes set by the Korea Grape Export Federation, Shine Muscat is divided into premium and 1st and 2nd grades. The weight per song is 400~1000 g for the 2nd grade and 500~1000 g for the premium and 1st grade.
Moldova
According to expert estimates, only a few thousand tons of table grapes of the 2022 harvest will remain in the fruit storage facilities of Moldova next year. According to the participants of viticulture associations, these products will be sold mainly on the domestic market to lovers of "niche" grapes, local stone fruit varieties, at a high price. This year, from January to March, inclusive, Moldovan traders exported about 18,000MT of grapes from the 2021 harvest. In principle, over the past five to six years, winter-spring external sales of Moldovan grapes did not fall below 6-7 thousand MT. The current situation is explained, firstly, by the relatively small volume of marketable grapes of the current year's crop, stored in storage for export in the second half of autumn and winter (according to expert estimates, about 20-30 thousand MT). Secondly, by intensive external supplies of products. So, in September-October, more than 20 thousand MT were exported from the country, in November the high rate of deliveries was preserved. According to major traders, this week they are "sending trucks with the last batches of grapes to the European Union." Despite the rather good demand for grapes "Moldova" at the end of the marketing season, prices for it, contrary to the expectations of farmers, did not increase. Since the last week of November, the average wholesale price for high-quality grapes of this variety has stabilised at the level of USD 0.61/kg (12 lei). In lei terms, this is the usual price for this period of the year, in dollar terms, it is one of the lowest over the past few years. Apparently, fearing power outages and other surprises, farmers and traders decided to sell the grapes as soon as possible, even at a low price.
Argentina
The Price of Grapes Rises With a 50% Lower Harvest Due to Frost, Speculation Grows
Although still under the classification of "estimates", the Mendoza government has already confirmed the total number of hectares affected by frost, as well as the drop in the production of grapes and other fruit trees that this would imply. Thus, there are more than 80,000 hectares affected, of which 54,000 correspond to vines, 23,000 to fruit trees and 2,500 to horticultural crops. In this context, and always according to official information based on the average damage reported, production will have a 51% drop for viticulture and 69% for the sector linked to the production of fruit trees. In this context and in the midst of the bid between the Nation and the Province, for the announcements of the Minister of Economy Sergio Massa that have not been fully fulfilled, the announcement of new aid for the sector and a certain delay in the quantification of the damages, both producers and Winemakers put the focus on what can happen with the price in 2023.
