The tigernut campaign in the 16 municipalities of La Huerta Norte de Valencia is coming to an end with historical high prices for the crop, around 80 cents per kilo, which has been consistent for several seasons and is profitable for farmers. The production is expected to be similar to previous years, with around 8 million kilos, half of which will be reduced in the drying process. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of horchaterias, global demand for tigernut has remained solid, with an increase in consumption of dried tigernut as a snack and the production of homemade horchata. Valencia is the only European producer of tigernuts, and imports of the tuber from Africa and China are used mainly for animal feed and industrial uses.
