The University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Programme is funding efforts to revitalize traditional Hawaiian fishponds with $315,759. Led by Andre Seale from the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the projects focus on sustainable aquaculture using sea cucumbers and striped mullet. The sea cucumber project aims to enhance spawning and larval viability, while the striped mullet project seeks to improve hatchery practices for better survival and growth in fishponds, emphasizing environmental resilience. Graduate assistants Tyler Goodearly and Reilly Merlo are also involved in these initiatives.
