Embrapa Acre is spearheading the 'Cacau Nativo' project in Boca do Acre, Amazon, to boost native cocoa production and identify its unique qualities. The project will assist producers in establishing plantations on dry land and floodplains, and aims to register the product for Geographical Indication (GI). The initiative is expected to enhance product quality, stabilize production, and increase local community income. The article also highlights the cocoa exploitation in the Camicuã indigenous land, benefiting many riverside producers and aiding forest preservation. However, the Ukraine war has reduced demand for Purus cocoa as German chocolate industries, the main buyers, have cut production.
