Europêche, a European fishing industry association, is supporting efforts to enhance surveillance and control measures by the International Commission for the conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) for better management of tropical tunas. ICCAT is currently having its extraordinary meeting in Egypt, where discussions are centered around tropical tuna management, bigeye tuna allocation, and Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) measures. Europêche is hoping that the quota allocation negotiation reflects the efforts made by the European purse seine fleet to reduce fishing effort, while also calling for a level playing field among all fleets and better monitoring of vessel numbers and devices used.
