(Andong=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Seung-hyung = On the 26th, it was reported that Kim Boo-deok, the representative of Taeyoung Farm (Uiseong) which grows apples, won the grand prize (Prime Minister's Prize) in the '2025 Republic of Korea Representative Fruit Selection Contest'.
This contest is the largest fruit selection contest in the country, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and organized by the Korea Fruit and Tree Agricultural Cooperatives Federation. Apples from Gyeongbuk have won the grand prize for two consecutive years, following last year.
Representative Kim Boo-deok cultivates varieties such as Fuji and Dongbuk 7ho in a 2.6 ha orchard in Oksan-myeon, Uiseong.
He has been quietly farming apples for 45 years. This year, when a large forest fire swept through the Gyeongbuk region, the flames spread to the vicinity of the orchard, causing damage to some agricultural materials and equipment. However, through relentless firefighting and the establishment of a defense line, he managed to protect the orchard and the apples in the cold storage.
In this contest, Mr. Shin Ju-seop (Sangju, Shine Muscat) won the best prize in the grape category, and Ms. Lee Do-hee (Gyeongsan, Red Queen apple) received a special prize.
In the forest fruit walnut category, Mr. Son Jong-su (Yecheon) won the best prize, Mr. Choi Un-seop (Yecheon County) won the excellence prize, and Ms. Kang Si-ji (Gimcheon) received an encouragement prize, achieving the top three positions for two consecutive years.
Kim Ju-reung, Director of the Gyeongbuk Agricultural and Fisheries Distribution Bureau, said, "By winning the grand prize for two consecutive years in the largest representative fruit selection contest in the country, it has been proven once again that Gyeongbuk is the largest and best fruit production base," and added, "We will do our best to present fruits that can capture the taste of people around the world."
