(Changwon=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Jeong-hun = Gyeongnam Rural Development Administration announced on the 28th that its own cultivated premium strawberry variety 'Geumsil' has received the Prime Minister's Award, the highest honor, at the 'Republic of Korea Excellent Variety Awards'.
Hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and organized by the National Institute of Crop Science, the award selects outstanding varieties developed in the country to boost the research enthusiasm of breeders and strengthen the competitiveness of the seed industry, and is known as the 'Jang Yeong-sil Award in the seed field'.
With this award, the 'Geumsil' variety has been officially recognized for its quality excellence and economic impact shown in both domestic and overseas markets.
'Geumsil' is a variety that has significantly improved the limitations of deformity and occurrence rate, sugar content deviation, and storability that were previously present in export varieties.
It has high sugar content and excellent firmness, low deformity ratio, and excellent weight and quantity, contributing to the improvement of agricultural productivity.
Based on these superior qualities, within five years of its development, it has accounted for more than 90% of South Korea's strawberry exports, establishing itself as the leading variety for domestic strawberry exports.
In the domestic market, it has consistently received high satisfaction and purchases, and is recognized for its differentiated value in the premium market.
Research and Development Director Yoon Hye-suk said, "The receipt of the Prime Minister's Award this time is significant as it credibly evaluates the variety development capabilities of the Gyeongnam Agricultural Technology Institute" and "By developing new varieties with various characteristics and integrating them with smart farm technology, we will further strengthen the global competitiveness of the Gyeongnam strawberry industry."
