The Turkish Religious Affairs Authority has declared several seafood species, including mussels, shrimp, squid, crabs, and lobster, unfit for consumption for Muslims, causing controversy and debate within the Turkish community. This decree conflicts with the growing trend in seafood production and exports in Turkey, which have experienced a 40% increase from January to July of this year, generating $ 763.663 million. This decision is particularly disappointing to those in the industry as seafood was not a traditional part of the Turkish diet, being seen as a practice inherited from the Byzantine, or Christian, tradition.
