In March 2025, the nearshore (frozen on board) red shrimp fishery in Argentina has just obtained MSC certification, while the fishery improvement project (FIP) for the frozen on board industry took a longer time, reaching 10 years. The Center for Sustainable Fisheries Development (CeDePesca) is responsible for the audits of the FIP and related certifications. CeDePesca stated, "This achievement for the entire industry belongs to all participants, including crew members, ship owners, companies, observers, scientists, and regulatory agencies." The institution also particularly emphasized the significant role played by the Argentine government fisheries department in providing scientific support and regulation, with participating units including the Argentine Federal Fisheries Council, the Deputy Secretary of Fisheries, and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The process to certification involved multiple stakeholders from the entire industry, with the specific participating companies listed as follows: MSC's evaluation work confirmed that the frozen on board fishery has already met relevant international standards in many aspects but also pointed out challenges that still exist. CeDePesca stated that the issuance of the MSC certification marks a phased achievement for the fishery improvement project, but it will also be a new starting point for continuous fishery monitoring and the implementation of additional conditions to continuously strengthen sustainability results. The Argentine red shrimp fishery is one of the most important fishery export industries in South America, mainly supplying the European, North American, and Asian markets. After obtaining MSC certification, the frozen on board fishery will continue to work in a coordinated manner to solve problems that were identified but not fully resolved during the evaluation process. CeDePesca stated, "The MSC certification is both a milestone and a new starting point. There are still areas for improvement in the fishery evaluation work, but the entire industry has once again confirmed that it will continue to enhance the sustainability of the fishery through cooperative efforts, ensure its long-term sustainability, increase its socioeconomic impact, and consolidate the position of Argentine red shrimp as a competitive and responsible product in the international market."
