(Chuncheon=Yonhap News) Reporter Yang Ji-woong = The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute urged the preemptive management of crops and agricultural facilities as an extremely cold snap is forecast for the Gangwon inland and mountainous areas on the 26th and 27th. Damaged parts of the greenhouses should be promptly repaired to prevent wind damage and heat loss, and care should be taken with window opening to prevent fog inside the facility due to daily temperature variations, thus preventing growth retardation and physiological damage. Furthermore, crops should be managed at appropriate temperatures, keeping night minimum temperatures above 12 degrees for over-mature vegetables and above 8 degrees for leafy vegetables, and ventilation should be maintained to keep the appropriate humidity. For fruit trees such as apples, fruit tree-specific white water-based paint should be applied to the tree trunks or straw should be wrapped around them to about 1 meter to prevent frostbite. Irrigation facilities should have their water completely drained due to concerns about freezing. Technical Extension Division Manager Yu Taek-geun urged, "Farmers should thoroughly conduct preemptive checks and insulation measures to prevent cold damage to open-field fruit trees due to low temperatures and damage to greenhouses vulnerable to strong winds."
