Bulgarian honey producers are concerned about the survival of the Bulgarian beekeepers in terms of getting paid fairly for the quality they produce.
According to the producers, the EU has been flooded with inexpensive Chinese and Ukrainian honey which in price presents itself pretty competitive while quality-wise there is no comparison with the Bulgarian made honey.
One of the biggest problems with the Chinese honey is that Bulgarian retailers have been promoting it as Bulgarian production and the retail price range on the shelves varies between €2-€5 per kg. The Ukrainian honey is sold in the EU for around €1,20 per kg.
Another problem is that the quality of the hıney cannot be checked and understood by end consumers immediately on the spot and the only way to verify the quality is through a laboratory inspection.
