Europe: The European Agency for Food Safety Advises Against Raising Chickens in Cages (Feb 21)
The European Agency for Food Safety (EFSA) has recommended on Feb 21 to avoid the use of cages in the breeding of chicks or laying hens to improve animal welfare. The EFSA, a scientific body based in Parma (Italy), has published two reports with recommendations to improve the welfare of chicken production (“broilers” and laying hens), in which it advises avoiding various practices: mutilation, restriction of feed and the use of cages. The agency's opinions affect the space, stocking density, lighting, noise, litter or platforms used on poultry farms. In the case of cages, EFSA experts advocate avoiding them and looking for alternative methods. The reports respond to questions raised after a citizen initiative that has promoted the end of the use of cages in livestock farming.
Europe: Poultry Farming Is in Danger of Collapse (Feb 23)
According to Copa-Cogeca, the latest recommendations from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the welfare of broilers and laying hens spell the end for most EU poultry farms. The recommendation to reduce the broiler stocking rate in conventional production to a maximum of 11 kg/m² is particularly shocking to the association. Currently, up to 26 broilers/m2 are allowed in the EU, this corresponds to approximately 42 kg/m2. In Austria and Switzerland, only 30 kg/m2 is allowed, which gives chickens almost 30% more space. This means expensive investments in poultry houses for conventional poultry farmers, while the number of animals would have to be reduced by 72%. Similar recommendations are contained in the EFSA report on laying hens. Copa-Cogeca criticized the report as unrealistic.
Europe: The European Commission Would Ban Keeping Hens in Cages (Feb 23)
It would be very painful for Hungarian poultry farmers if the European Commission really banned the keeping of hens in cages, since 80-85% of the hens raised in Hungary are still kept in this way. The proposals for new EU regulations will be made public in W8. In the middle of the week, the European Commission will present its ideas on how to change the currently used label system for the way poultry is kept. The conditions of keeping animals have become an important issue in the European Union. The Commission decided in 2021 to propose legislation until 2023 to phase out and then ban the keeping of breeding animals in cages, after the population of the member states launched a successful pan-European civil movement on the issue. Poultry farming is currently covered by four categories in terms of the living conditions of the animals: organic farming, free farming, alternative farming and cage farming
The 10.970M/MT forecast at the moment remains short of the 11.030M/MT of 2020 and, if achieved, will represent a very limited annual increase of less than 0.5% compared to the 10.920M/MT of 2022. Effect of Avian Influenza which, combined with the interruption of world trade due to Covid-19 (2020), caused European exports to decline by more than 15% compared to the pre-pandemic period (2.148M/MT in 2019; 1.780M/MT in 2022). The detail in relation to European poultry farming is that more than 80% of the expected production is concentrated in one third of the 27 members of the bloc, that is, in just nine countries.
Malaysia: Supply of Chicken and Eggs Enough for Ramadan (Feb 25)
The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has confirmed that the supply of chicken and eggs in the country is enough to meet the high demand ahead of the coming Ramadan month. Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said he held a discussion with poultry farmers about problems they faced, including the lack of foreign workers. “Eggs and chicken supply are enough; we have already discussed with egg and poultry farmers. The shortage was caused by a lack of manpower, which is being rectified. The government, with the cooperation of the Immigration Department, the police, and the human resources ministry, will facilitate the process so that operators can hire more workers,” he said at a press conference after officiating the Agro-tourism and Agro-youth Tour Program on Feb 25.
Belgium: Bird Flu on Broiler Farm (Feb 24)
There are few other poultry farms in the immediate vicinity of the affected farm, but there are a number of poultry slaughterhouses. According to the report from the National Poultry Association, the contamination has been detected in broilers ready for slaughter and an increased mortality has already been observed in one of the stables in recent days. The source of contamination is not (yet) clear. In addition to this infection, there was also an infection recently at a hobby holder in Péruwelz, near the French border. Due to the small number of animals, no transport ban has been imposed there. In W7, there were also outbreaks at three private poultry farmers: in Lens (Henegouwen region), in Zandhoven (Antwerp region) and in Lochristi (East Flanders). Mortality was particularly high at all three locations. Enclosure and shielding obligation in Belgium, there is still a penning obligation or (when animals are outside) a shielding obligation.
Brazil: In January, São Paulo Consumers Paid the Lowest Price in 10 Months for Chilled Chickens (Feb 23)
According to Procon-SP, chilled chicken was among the top five products in the basic basket of São Paulo consumers, which, last January and compared to the previous month, recorded a price drop (5.23%). But not only that, as the average price recorded, of USD 2.15/kg (R$11.24) corresponded to the lowest value in the last 10 months, being only above that observed in the 1st quarter of 2022. Even so, by minimal margins, very close to the inflation official index accumulated in the same period (5.77% by IPCA). Comparing retail prices to those registered in the Great Wholesale of the city of São Paulo, it is possible to see that in the average of the 25 months between January 2021 and January 2023, the margin between the two segments was, on average, 66%. The lowest variation was recorded in July 2021, when chilled slaughtered chicken reached consumers in São Paulo with an increase of 37% on the retail price. The biggest change occurred in January last year, when the wholesale price suffered a monthly retraction of more than 13%, but retail prices did not fall in the same proportion, resulting in a margin of 100%. That is: the consumer paid twice the price reached in the wholesale market.
Brazil: Chicken Meat Shipments Maintained Good Performance in the Third Week of February (Feb 24)
In the third week of February (12 to 18, five working days) 107.49K MT were exported, which meant average daily shipments close to 21.5K MT and an accumulated total (13 working days) of approximately 248K MT. Hence the current daily average, 19.06K MT/day, volume 7.91% and 6.70% higher than the daily averages of last January and February 2022. It's just a pity, as has been said before, that the month is shorter. But even if the current projection, around 362K MT in the month, leads to a lower result than last January (almost 390K MT of in natura product), the expectation of annual expansion prevails (339K MT a year ago).
Brazil: São Paulo Poultry Farmer’s Purchasing Power Improves (Feb 24)
Live chicken prices have been registering an increase in this part of February, while the values of the activity's main inputs, corn and soy bran, are falling. This movement has resulted in an improvement in the purchasing power of poultry farmers in the state of São Paulo. Cepea data show that, in the February part (until the 22nd), producers from São Paulo manage to acquire 1.74kg of soybean meal with the sale of a kilogram of live chicken, 3.7% more than in January.
Brazil: Frozen and Chilled Chicken Prices in São Paulo Went Up on Feb 24 (Feb 24)
Quotations in a mixed field mark the end of this Feb 24 for the chicken market. According to the president of the Brazilian Association of Chick Producers (Apinco), José Paulo Meirelles Kors, the accommodation of broiler chicks in December 2022 will accelerate, generating an extra supply of chicken meat in the internal market, putting pressure on prices at the beginning of the year. However, according to data from Cepea/Esalq, a reaction in the market is starting to be outlined. In São Paulo, according to Scot Consultoria, poultry on the farm was stable at USD 0.94/kg (R$4.90) while chicken wholesale had a decrease of 0.45%, costing USD 1.26/kg (R$6.62). In the case of live animals, São Paulo had no price reference.
Australia: Launching 5-Year Research and Development Poultry Plan (Feb 22)
Agri-Futures Australia has announced a new 5-year research, development and extension plan for Australia’s USD 4.46B (AUS$$6.6B) chicken meat industry. Chicken meat, which represents more than 46% of all meat consumed in Australia, is the most popular source of animal protein in the country, contributing almost USD 2.03B (AUS$3B) to the national economy and employing over 58K people. While approximately 800 contract growers rear about 80% of Australia’s meat chickens, meat exports account for less than 5% of total production and are dominated by low-value cuts such as edible offal and chicken feet. Poultry meat production in 2023/24 is projected at 1.3M MT, when it is estimated that consumption per person will reach 47.6 kg/person.
Peru: Increase in the Price of Chicken Is Due to the Fact That Less Soybeans Entered the Country (Feb 22)
The Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Nelly Paredes, announced that the recent increase in the price of chicken in the markets is due to the fact that soybeans, an input for feeding these birds that comes from Bolivia, have had difficulties entering the country for the Puno region. "Another option has been seen for it to enter through another highway, but there also a change of truck is necessary, because the Bolivian truck cannot pass," he said. He also indicated that Midagri is evaluating other measures to achieve the largest supply of soybeans. "As a ministry we are looking for alternatives so that soybeans can enter the country as quickly as possible and we are also working with the Ministry of Production to encourage more fish consumption at this time," he said. He said that soy does reach the different departments of the country, but not in the necessary quantity; and ruled out that there is a shortage of chicken in the markets.
Livestock and fisheries have long been called out for being the top contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture industry. New research suggests that it is all because of conventional animal feed. In a recently published study in the journal Current Biology, scientists share that at least 78% of chicken and 69% of salmon industries’ contribution to environmental degradation can be accounted for by the animal feed used. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, more than 55% of both industries’ contribution also comes from the type and processing of animal feed. This comes as a surprise, especially since the chicken and salmon industries are known to be more environmentally efficient than beef, according to scientists.
South Korea: Egg and Chicken Farm Prices Continue to Decline (Feb 21)
The price of eggs and chicken farms is showing a downward trend every day. According to the data of the Livestock Products Quality Evaluation Institute, on the 20th, the production site price for a special plate (30 pieces) was USD 3.11 (4,091 won), down 13.5% from the average of USD 3.60 (4,731 won) last month. As for chicken, the price per kg of live chicken distribution has been around USD 1.52 (2K won) since the beginning of this month, but has gradually declined to USD 1.44 (1,894 won) from the 13th and USD 1.21 (1,592 won) on the 20th. In the field, it is believed that the price is falling as the stock piled up all at once and is not consumed. However, with the opening of school in early March, a recovery is expected if meal supply increases. The reason for the drop in chicken prices was found to be weak due to an increase in supply due to the overlap of the decrease in body weight due to the cold and the existing shipments.
South Korea: Highly Pathogenic AI Confirmed at Two Chicken Farms in Jeongeup, 167K Slaughtered (Feb 25)

In Paraguay, two suspicions were reported, but both gave a negative diagnosis. Paraguay is on maximum alert due to the increase in cases of avian influenza in the continent and this increases the probability of entry of the disease (greater than 50%) in the next six months. Currently, there are 16 countries in the Americas that have identified cases of avian influenza, including Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Costa Rica and recently Guatemala.

Japan: Egg Prices Surge on Bird Flu, Costs of Feed and Labor (Feb 23)
An avian influenza outbreak and rising feed costs are behind a shortage of chicken eggs in Japan that has led to rising prices for popular restaurant items including beef bowl dishes as well as the household staple mayonnaise. Poultry farmers were already reducing the number of egg-laying hens in response to soaring feed prices fueled by the war in Ukraine when bird flu hit Japan late last year. The increase in chicken culls has made the supply of eggs unstable , causing wholesale prices to skyrocket.
