Despite the abundant summer grass in 2021, following a Northwest drought, hay prices have increased, with meadow grass small bales now costing at least BGN 2.50-3, up from BGN 2-2.50 last year. Alfalfa bales have seen a significant increase, from BGN 4-5 last year to BGN 4.50-6, and straw prices have doubled from 1 lev to BGN 3. With corn prices at 35 cents / kg and concerns about potential harvest issues, farmers face rising costs for winter animal feeding. Additionally, transportation costs, which range from 0.50 to 1 BGN / km, need to be factored in, encouraging farmers to opt for shorter destinations to limit these expenses.
