The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is urging member states of the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) to pass measures to protect tuna stocks at their upcoming meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam. The MSC wants these countries to agree on harvest strategies for tuna to maintain certification for these fisheries. The call for these strategies is supported by the fishing industry, NGOs, and leading retailers. Failure to implement these strategies could risk the long-term health of the tuna stocks and their certification. MSC-certified tuna fisheries in the Western Central Pacific must implement stronger harvest strategies by June 2023 to remain certified.
