In 2020, Argentina saw a significant shift in food consumption as the per capita consumption of potatoes surpassed that of beef, reaching 52 kilos compared to 50.6 kilos of beef. This change is part of a broader trend in which potato consumption has been on the rise, increasing by 18% from 2016 to 2020 to 52 kilos per person per year. This increase is due to both increased fresh potato consumption and the consumption of industrialized potatoes, which has nearly doubled since 2016. The Faculty of Agrarian Sciences of Balcarce, which conducted the study, attributes this trend to the pandemic, which has led to more home cooking and a preference for comfort foods like potatoes. This shift is reflective of a broader trend in Europe, with countries like Spain, Switzerland, and Germany also experiencing increased potato consumption during the pandemic.
