Peru Anticipates 25% YoY Drop in Blueberry Exports, Causing a Global Price Surge

Peru anticipates a 25% year-on-year (YoY) reduction in fresh blueberry exports by the end of the 2023/2024 campaign, reaching 215 thousand metric tons(mt) compared to the previous season's 285 thousand mt. The decline is attributed to lower production volumes and delays caused by high temperatures, particularly affecting the northern Peruvian coast. Despite this, international prices have surged due to Peru's significant role as the primary global blueberry exporter. The impact of reduced Peruvian production is reflected in markets worldwide, emphasizing the country's pivotal position. New varieties, resilient to high temperatures, offer a potential solution, highlighting the ongoing exploration of optimal blueberry cultivation in Peru.

Argentine Blueberry Industry Achieves Profitable Season Despite 25% YoY Production Decline

The Argentine Blueberry industry concluded the season with 6,400 tons, a 25% YoY decrease from the previous 2022 season, resulting in favorable prices. The secretary of the Argentine Blueberry Committee (ABC) notes satisfaction with market balance, anticipating it as a profitable decision for producers. The United Kingdom (UK) experienced the most substantial YoY growth of Argentinian blueberry imports, reaching 1,880%, trailed by Canada at 255%, the United States at 114%, and the EU at 4%. On the other hand, Hong Kong, China, faced a 35% decrease in Argentinian blueberry imports, and the overall Asian market saw a 55% drop. The blueberry sector of Argentina anticipates exploring niche markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Israel, India, and Brazil in 2024. A meeting with new authorities secures an exclusion of export taxes, providing favorable conditions for the industry.
