Chum Salmon is the major species for the domestic catch of salmon in Japan. Fishers in Hokkaido, northern area of Japan, are top suppliers of Chum Salmon for the domestic market. Usually, Hokkaido fishers start to catch Chum Salmon under the annual bilateral agreement on salmon and trout fishing, which is sealed between Japan and Russia by 10th April. However, their relationship was strained by the Russia-Ukraine war, and the meeting for the agreement was heavily delayed until 11th April this year. How the meeting ends is yet unknown. This concerns some fishers the discretion of landing amount or even the cancellation of fishing for this season.
